Leadership 101: A Survey of Leadership Theory and Practice

 

Target Audience: New and senior line officers, and leaders at all levels of the organization.

Length: 8 hours

 

“Leadership 101” is designed to provide a baseline understanding of leadership as a concept, field of study, and organizational practice. Though it is a curriculum based one-day training event, it is designed to challenge attendees to think about the leadership dynamic both individually as leaders, and collectively as an organization. Leadership 101 will delve into the definition of leadership, leadership characteristics and traits, and leadership theories and models. Significantly, the day concludes with a class discussion on the differences between transactional vs transformational leadership practices and which are most effective for law enforcement practitioners. 

 

 

The Four Levels of Leadership

 

Length: 8 hours

Target Audience: Line officers, first line promotional candidates, and first line supervisors.

 

As an abstract concept, many people understand what leadership is yet to find it difficult to describe- much less implement and practice it.

 

“The Four Levels of Leadership”, which loosely utilizes the United States Army’s “Be-Know-Do” leadership model, looks specifically at what knowledge, skills, and abilities (collectively known as competencies) are required for effective leadership at each of the distinct levels of leadership -supervisory, organizational, and executive. Additionally, attendees will also explore the roles, relationships, and connectivity of the three levels of leadership in pursuit of the organizational unity of effort. Lastly, the curriculum will include the concept of personal leadership which, using much of what Terry Anderson, Ph.D. developed in his break-through work for law enforcement leadership “Every Officer is a Leader”, is essential for effective law enforcement leadership development.  

           

 

Leadership Framework: Implementing and Sustaining Effective Practice Models

 

Length: 16 hours

Target Audience: Senior leaders, newly appointed chiefs/sheriffs.

 

Many leaders demonstrate excellent individual leadership skills which are often recognized and rewarded by way of promotion and advancement. Creating a leadership culture, which is dependent upon common leadership practices and results in predictable organizational outcomes, often becomes the next and most pressing challenge for senior leaders.

 

“Leadership Frameworks: Implementing and Sustaining Effective Practice Models” is designed to help senior leaders with recognizing, understanding, implementing, and most importantly, sustaining effective leadership practice models that support the agency’s values and missions. Utilizing a seminar format, this course will introduce leaders to the structural components of leadership and how to manage that dynamic, through instruction, case studies, and exercises. The course is intended to broaden senior leader perspectives on organizational leadership while introducing them to proven practices which sustain consistent, standardized and effective leadership practices throughout all levels of the organization.

Denis retired as Director of Staff, Rhode Island Air National Guard with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in 2015. He previously served as the Rhode Island National Guard’s Public Affairs Officer and Communications Director from 2006-2012. Denis entered the full-time National Guard force upon retirement from the Lincoln, Rhode Island, Police Department in 2004 after twenty years of service, having attained the rank of Detective Lieutenant.  Denis served in state government from January 2015 through June 2017 on a Governor-appointed reform team at the Rhode Island Department of Children Youth and Families. He was specifically charged with building capacity within the communications and workforce development arenas.
